Chicago Section of STLE Presents:

"How to Replace Medium and Long Chain Chlorinated Paraffins in Metalworking Fluids"

Ben Faber

The Lubrizol Corporation

Thursday, February 16th, 2017

Abstract:

The future use of medium and long-chain chlorinated paraffins in the United States is a hotly debated topic within the metalworking industry. The U.S. EPA has already stated that there will be some level of regulation limiting their use, and now attention is on what applications get exempted and when does the ban go into effect. Regardless of the outcome of the debate, there are a number of end-users and OEM’s that have begun instituting their own ban on chlorine, and are making their preference known for chlorine-free MWF’s.

Replacing chlorinated paraffins (CPs) is a complex problem, and a formulator must take many factors into consideration (operation, metallurgy, speed, MWF type, cost, etc.). Thankfully, Lubrizol has been leading the industry to chlorine-free additives for decades, and this presentation will share tips and best practices that have been discovered through experience. We will share information on the best classes of additives to try, the best bench tests to use, and how to use synergistic mixtures to reduce costs.
