Chicago Section of STLE Presents:

”Formulating Metalworking Fluids with Microalgal Very High Oleic Oil:

Eliminating Chlorinated Paraffins”

Dr. Adrienne McKee
Solazyme, Inc.

Thursday, October 15th, 2015

Abstract:

In anticipation of the EPA’s proposed 2016 ban on midchain chlorinated paraffins, formulators are looking for alternatives that provide extreme pressure performance on difficult to machine metals. With its inherent lubrication properties, microalgal very high oleic triglyceride oils (≥ 88% oleic acid) shows improved load performance and reduced torque and wear relative to quality petroleum based incumbents. Here, we will showcase mock metal forming and metal removal examples wherein microalgal very high oleic oil base oils alone or in combination with its derivatives outcompete commercial petroleum formulations additized with chlorinated-paraffin containing products, achieving these outcomes on stainless steel and titanium substrates.
