Chicago Section of STLE Presents:

"Tribological Properties of Oxidized Vegetable Oils Used in Metalworking Applications"

Dr. Mark T. Devlin
Afton Chemical Co.

Thursday, November 19th, 2015

Abstract:

Metal-working fluids need to be bio-compatible so it is not surprising that derivatives of naturally occurring oils are often times used as additives in these fluids. The behavior of vegetable oils in common metal-working tests such as tapping and compression tests have been documented. However, to develop the next generation of vegetable oil based additives a deeper understanding of the tribological properties of these oils is needed. In this presentation the connection between common metal-working tests and physical properties more familiar to a tribologist will be made. The behavior of vegetable oils in basic tribological tests will also be shown. This leads to a molecular based understanding of how vegetable oils act to improve metal-working performance.

Biography:

Dr. Mark T. Devlin received his B.A. in Chemistry from Duke University in 1983 and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Virginia in 1987. Mark then worked as an IRTA Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD until he joined Afton Chemical Corporation in 1990. He is currently a Technical Advisor at Afton, where he has been studying the rheological and tribological properties of lubricants. Mark has been a co-author or co-inventor on over 100 technical papers and patents. These technical publications cover a broad range of topics related to the fundamental activity of lubricants for use in engines, transmissions, automotive gears and industrial machinery. Throughout his career Mark has been an active member of STLE, SAE, ASTM and ACS.
